August 2002 On the 3rd the troop attended an Oakland A's game with our Charter organization, the Warm Springs Rotary Club. A tailgate party preceeded the game where scouts from Troop 103 presented the flags in Center Field prior to the start of the game. Oh, yea, the A''s won. A group of 9 scouts attended a white water canoe trip on the Klamath river the week of the 11th - 17th. Everyone had a fantastic time including Mrs. DeGregorio who filled in as our adult on the water.
July 2002 The troop participated in the annual Fremont 4th of July Parade. Later in the month the troop spent a week of Summer Camp at Camp Royaneh earning Merit Badges, Rank Advancements, and having lots of just plain fun!
June 2002 On the 14th the troop did a Service project at our meeting location, Warm Springs Elementary School. We assembled 6 picnic tables for use by the students during lunch. Our final Court of Honor for the school year was held on the 10th. Several rank advancements and merit badges were awarded. A small but dedicated group travelled to Sunset Beach in Santa Cruz on the 7th-9th for a Family Campout. Lots of time was spent at the beach looking for clams and playing in the surf. The weather was nice and other than a few slight sun burns everyone had a good time.
May 2002 Boating was the theme for this month. We took the canoes and some kyakas to Lake Berryessa on the 17-19th. We camped beside the lake which made the launching of the boats easy. Everyone improved their skills at using the canoes and several scouts practiced skills they need to master for the Canoeing Merit Badge.
April 2002 A large group of scouts travelled to Pico Blanco Scout Reservation south of Monterey for a camp out on the 19-21st. A long windy road ended with tall 1,500 year old redwoods, a waterfall and a drive through the river. Lots of advancement and scout skills were accomplished along with plenty of time to just expore the river and the beauty of this camp.
March 2002 Angel Island was the destination on the 8th-10th. The scouts boarded a ferry along with their bikes for the short trip to the island. After getting to the campsite and setting up everyone took off on their bikes to explore the island. Before dinner and our campfire everyone worked on a service project of cleaning out drainage ditches. Since is rained pretty heavy during the night we were glad we did this.
February 2002 The troop attended the Mission Peak District Indoor Rally on Friday, Feburary 1st and participated in 6 events demonstrating scout skills. On the 9th-10th we travelled to Pinecrest for a snow campout. Everyone had such a good time that two weeks later on the 23rd, seven scouts went back to the snow, to Dodge Ridge this time, for a day of more fun in the snow. Also on the 23rd we welcomed six Webelos scouts to the troop from Pack 199 at a bridging ceremony. On the 24th we joined our Charter Organization at their annual Citizen of the Year presentation where the troop helped with the setup of the room and provided the opening flag ceremony. Two Webelos from Pack 153 bridged to Troop 103 on the 27th. WOW! A busy month!
January 2002 January found the troop busy with two activities. On the 12th we hosted Webelos scouts in a campout and activity day at Los Moches and then on the 26th we hiked to the top of Mt. Diablo as part of the Rim-of-the-Bay hiking program.
December 2001 A ten mile bike ride to Coyote Hills was the destination for 20 scouts on Saturday the 8th. After arriving, the group spent several hours exploring the hills and surrounding areas before setting up camp. The evening saw our second annual "Golden Skillet" competition with the patrols going all out to prepare and serve the best dinner. The results were very close with the Flamming Arrow Patrol edging out the Cobra patrol for this years honors. Sunday morning everyone awoke to a cold and blustery day; but this did not bother these hearty scouts. A ten mile bike ride back to the awaiting cars and transportation home was needed before this outing would be over.
November 2001 November is always a busy month for the troop. Scouting-For-Food takes place on two Saturdays. On the 10th we distribute bags to every doorstep in our territory and then return the following Saturday to collect the bags of food. This year we collected 3160 items (2440 cans, 79 bottles, & 636 dry goods) to be distributed to area food banks.
After distributing the bags we travelled to Los Moches Scout Camp for a "Survivor Campout". Each patrol camped on their own in a remote location using only what they could carry in their packs. Before leaving Sunday, each patrol competed in an orienteering course of over a mile.
On Saturday the 17th, after we collected food bags, the troop held a Junior Leader Training (JLT) course at Los Moches. The course was run by the older more experienced scouts for the newly elected and appointed troop and patrol leaders. At 1:00 a.m. on Sunday morning a group of intrepid souls marched to the top of Observation Hill and lay down on the ground to look up at the night sky. The Leonid meteor shower was in full swing and the frequent comment heard was "this is cool".
October 2001 On the 20th a group of 14 scouts travelled to Manresa Beach south of Aptos for a one-day beach outing. Wave surfing and football were the major activities for a relaxing day of just plain fun. The end of the day marked a beach football game between the scouts and adults which the scouts won in the final minutes by a touchdown. On Saturday the 6th, a group of 8 scouts hiked 8.5 miles to the top of Mt. Tamalpais to earn their Rim-of-the-Bay rocker.
September 2001 A year of planning and preparation came to fruition the weekend of September 21-23 when over 380 people converged on Camp Royaneh to attend this years Mission Peak Fall Camporee. 45 patrols participated in 10 events ranging from fire starting to knot tying all with the underlying intent of demonstrating teamwork and leadership skills. An evening campfire skit that encompassed recognizing the winners of each event was well received by everyone. It is a tradition to end these campfires with Scout Vespers a song that reflects on what scouting is about and its values. In light of the recent events of September 11th the troop decided to end with all of the Troop 103 scouts and adults on the stage of the amphitheater singing "God Bless America" with the entire audience of over 300 joining in--a very moving ending to a great event. Troop 103 left Royaneh Sunday afternoon tired and worn out, but they all did so with a great deal of pride in Troop 103 and a renewed sense of what scouting is all about.
